The Simpsons Should Make a New Game

Playing The Simpsons Game recently has made us look back at other Simpson games and wonder why there haven’t been any for a long time

I’ve recently been paying The Simpsons Game on my PSP which is a very enjoyable game. I’ve also recently dug out my PlayStation 2 and have relived the great Simpsons Road Rage. It made me realise that a new Simpsons game hasn’t been released for a long time. Unless you include the app Tapped Out there’s been nothing new since 2007. I was thinking how great a new game would look in the style of South Park: The Stick of Truth. The Simpsons have made so many great games over the years that it made me want to look back over some of the best ones.

The Simpsons Arcade Game

Let’s start with the first one way back in 1991. Developed by Konami, this beat ’em up style game came out a couple of years after The Simpsons first hit our screens in 1989. The game saw The Simpsons family witness a jewellery store robbery by none other than Waylon Smithers. After the diamond he wanted falls in Maggie’s mouth Smithers snatches Maggie and our favourite yellow family fight their way through various levels to finally face off against Smithers and Mr. Burns and rescue Maggie. The game was a hit in arcades earning 4.5/5 stars from reviewers. The game was put on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in 2012 but was subsequently removed with no reason as to why.

The Simpsons Wrestling

Jump ahead 10 years that involved many games featuring mainly Bart and you will find the first game of the franchise for PlayStation. Wrestling was big at the time and the show capitalised on this. Featuring 20 characters from the show and an unfamiliar 3D feel the game was not a hit with the critics! However, fans loved the game and found it great fun unlocking all of the characters and seeing who had the best moves and taunts.

This game was awesome! Released in 2001 the same year as wrestling this game was made for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and eventually Gameboy Advance.  Mr Burns took over public transport and crated radioactive buses which were a hazard to public health. In order to protest the residents of Springfield took matters into their own hands and set up a taxi service. It was an addictive game with plenty of unlockable characters. It caused controversy though as SEGA sued the makers of the game for ripping off their game Crazy Taxi. It was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Hit & Run

The 2003 game for PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube adopted a Grand Theft Auto style and was more favourable with critics. The aim of the game was to find out what was happening in Springfield due to alien activity and a new form of Buzz Cola that was causing insanity. It was a fresh take on The Simpsons video games and felt like a modern version of the original arcade game. Fans loved it and it is considered the best of the franchises’ video games.

The Simpsons Game

This game came out in 2007 for all of the consoles that were available at the time. It’s the last game that was released on consoles almost 10 years ago. It is one of my favourites and poked fun at itself and gaming. Once again the family had to find out what was going on in Springfield and use the advantages of being in a video game to give themselves powers. The game ends with the families looking for the creator of the universe finding Matt Groening himself and God. It was great fun and was another game that was received well with both critics and fans.

Tapped Out

The latest game from the franchise. I don’t enjoy time based apps and Family Guy soon followed suit. South Park have criticized their rivals for making these apps in a hilarious episode. The aim of the game is to build Springfield and earn money to build more parts. It can be entertaining to begin with but then, as all time based apps seem to go, it becomes boring and difficult to get any further unless you pay real money to buy virtual donuts.

I’m unsure why there hasn’t been a Simpsons game on consoles for almost 10 years. The TV show is still doing well in its 27th season and there’s talks of another movie. Maybe Tapped Out is the cause and the whole time they are making money from virtual donuts they’re not interested in making a new game. There’s been a few rumours about a new game over the years but never anything solid. Lets hope they make a new game soon as they are good fun for fans.
