I’ve followed Bates Motel from its very first episode and have enjoyed it but was growing a little tired of it. I knew how the story would end being a different take on the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. However, season 4 really stepped up a gear!
The plot of season 4 saw Norman get psychological help, Norma marry Sheriff Romero and Emma receive the transplant that she needed. I didn’t really enjoy the story of Emma and Dylan. It felt disjointed and didn’t tie in to the main story as much as I would have hoped but I think this will change next season. I was absolutely gobsmacked to find out that Norma had been killed off in episode 9. The whole season with Norman, Norma and Sheriff Romero was great but to kill her off? That was a game-changer! I really thought she would survive until the last episode but it has made me all the more excited for the fifth season of the show. Norman can’t cope without her so he’s created the split personality we know in order to cope making him truly Psycho!
Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga are two of the best actors on television at the moment. They have really made this show what it is and were even more remarkable in season 4. The other actors in the show were great but both Highmore and Farmiga deserve awards for their performances. I’m a little worried that Farmiga will not shine as much next season as she’ll only be the other side of Norman now but it’ll be fun to see her play the dark side full time. The direction and setting of this show was perfect. Seeing the house as it was in the old film is the familiarity that the show need to get started but having the show set in modern times is a nice touch.
I was completely blown away by Bates Motel this season. I’ve liked previous seasons but this one was so good and something that fans deserved to see. We really saw Norman descend into madness and it was perfectly portrayed by the show’s two main actors. I was a little bored of the B story with Emma and Dylan but it wasn’t bad. The main story with Norman and Norma really made up for it though and the final episode was perfection. Norma’s death was a complete surprise and propelled Norman to where we wanted him to be. I’m very excited for the final season next year and I’m kind of hoping that the last episode will be a re-enactment of Psycho itself as Freddie Highmore will be amazing in it.
If you want to catch up with the show it’s repeated on Universal Channel and its first three seasons are on Netflix UK.
